“The first edition of the UCI Cycling World Championships was awarded to Glasgow and across Scotland (Great Britain), with 13 separate UCI World Championships scheduled over 11 days of competition. After this inaugural edition from 3 to 13 August 2023, the mega event will be held every four years, the year preceding the Summer Olympic Games.”
Yes, you read that correctly. One of the largest cycling events ever and it is here in Glasgow (other locations as well – Fort William and Glen Tress). This is an event for everyone and anyone who loves bikes. From the technical mastery of BMX FlatLand to the insane flare and tricks of BMX Freestyle, to the excitement of the Para athletes putting it all on the line in the cycling track and road events, to the inclusive Gran Fondo (a race for everyone, paperboy vs pro for example), to Trials and Mountains Bike downhill.

What Cycling Action Can You Watch?
BMX Flatland
Like indoor cycling, it’s like ballet on a bike. BMX flatland athletes do tricks on their bikes without the use of ramps or other street obstacles. Think of tricks like a wheelie, a bar spin, bunny hop, a decade and more. These athletes will spin and hop, as they perform tier breathtaking dances.
BMX Freestyle
If you are old enough to remember the film BMX Bandits you will know what Freestyle is, for the younger generation, think X Games. Ramps, slides, front flips, back flips, 360 spins and more. Man/woman and machine flying through the air in gravity-defying stunts. Each round is scored for complexity, style etc and the highest points win. This is sure to be a great event for all the family to watch.
BMX Racing
Big jumps and lots of speed as the athletes take tight corners and zoom around the course at Glasgow’s world-class BMX centre. It is a race, first across the line wins.
Gran Fondo
The big race, and if you are keen, if you have been racing everyone on that commute to work and are ready to see if you really have what it takes, then get on down and enter. This is for everyone, pit yourself against the pros and see how you stack up.
Indoor Cycling
This is a form of artistic cycling, it is similar in theory to BMX Flatland, however, the bikes are very different and the tricks and skill sets on display differ greatly. Like ballet on a bike, another great spectator event for all the family.
Mountains Bike Cross Country
Over at Glen Tress, the cross-country athletes will put bravery and endurance to the test as they jostle for position in this intense race. Rough terrain, slopes, hills, water, mud, carnage and chaos. Who will be crowned the winner?
Mountains Bike Cross Country Marathon
Over at Glen Tress the cross-country athletes will put endurance to the test as they ride threw 100KM in this epic race over road, gravel, mud, climbs, descents and everything in between. Only the fittest endurance athlete will compete in this ultra-endurance event.
Mountains Bike Downhill
The world-class downhill tracks at Fortwilliams Nevis range will host this epic downhill event. There is only one way to go and that is downhill and fast, riders can reach up to 80 KPH as they turn, bank, jump, balance and pedal their way to the rainbow jersey. One of the most exciting cycling spectator sports, that really has to be seen to be believed.
Para-Cycling Road
With stamina, guts and lots of willpower, as the world’s best para cyclist, hit the roads of Glasgow. Who has the endurance, power and speed to take Gold? Another great spectator sport for the whole family.
Para-Cycling Track
The velodrome will be alive with excitement as the para cyclists race around the track. One not to be missed.
Road Cycling
It is one of the most classic cycling events, road racing. Like the Tour de France except in Scotland. Strategy, guts, pace, and teamwork will see someone crowned.
Track Cycling
A cycling event we are famous for from legends like Graeme Obree to Sir Chris Hoy. Fractions of a second decide who wins and who goes home empty-handed. Fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled, spectator gold.
Trials
In recent years this spectacular sport has been popularised by Danny McCaskill and his breathtaking skills. Now you have a chance to watch these athletes perform and compete live in Glasgow. Extreme bicycle agility and technical skills will be on display for all the family to enjoy.
