Open Water Swimming Gear

Our equipment is suitable for open water swimming or pool swimming where appropriate. Open water swimming is very popular and is very diverse in the way people participate in it. From a quick 5 minute cold water dip to long distance marathons one thing is the same; the health and mental health benefits of open water swimming are something most participants agree on.

Wetsuit or no wetsuit?

That is the question! And it’s down to personal choice and down to personal body makeup. The ability to swim happily in cold water without a wetsuit can very hugely from person to person. In our experience, most people need a wetsuit to swim in colder water.

For those brave enough to swim without a wetsuit it is quite common for their hands and feet to still be painfully cold so it’s not unusual to see a ‘skins’ swimmer wearing neoprene gloves and socks.

Get Yourself Seen

Making yourself more visible when open water swimming is highly advised. Firstly , if you are in a body of water where there are boats moving around the risk of being hit by one can be quite high. Boat captains do not have good visibility of swimmers in the water and making yourself more visible with the help of a tow float and high visibility caps and gloves can make a huge difference.

Secondly, if you get into trouble and need to be rescued its not a great idea to be in a black wetsuit in black water as you’ll be really hard to find. You’ll notice out swimming wetsuits have coloured cuffs to make your arms more visible when doing your swim stroke.
