LOMO Peak Spotlight
RRP: £6 Target price: £6
A really simple budget buy to kick us off. genuinely love having this little buddy in my rucksack. It’s incredibly basic: throwing just 60 lumens, using 3 AAA batteries, and costing just £6, it’s not meant for all-night adventures. But knowing it’s there in my pack if forget a posher head torch (or forget to charge it up) is invaluable. It throws a basic corona with a centralised ‘hotspot’, making it perfectly suitable for a night walk in the woods or over fields. It’s great for dog-walks and jobs around the house too. And while it may lack sophistication, it does at least have twin red LEDs, which can also flash for an SOS. The main downsides are:
1) you can’t monitor the battery life, 2) the white light from the other torches in this test is on instantly and noticeably brighter and broader, and 3) the difference between its high and low settings is barely noticeable. I’d also say that its simple stretch-fabric strap isn’t quite as comfy as the softer options on its peers, and unlike most of the others it isn’t rated for water immersion. But for an outlay of £6 and the peace of mind of having it as a fallback, the Peak makes all kinds of sense.
BEST FOR: Permanent readiness for an emergency or an unexpected cave.
